Historical and linguistic note
Ansuz is the fourth rune of the first aett. Its Proto-Germanic name *ansuz means 'god' in the sense of the Æsir, and in the Old Norse tradition the rune is associated with Odin, speech and poetry. The Anglo-Saxon poem renamed the rune ōs, 'mouth', and describes it as the source of language and wisdom — a reminder that the association with speaking is very old.
