Elder Futhark Rune Meanings

Traditional symbolism and reflective questions for the twenty-four runes. Reference pages are published one at a time, only when the entry is complete. 18+ symbolic entertainment.

What Are Runes?

Runes are the letters of early Germanic writing systems, used from roughly the second century onward on stone, wood, bone and metal. Each letter also carried a name — a word such as 'cattle', 'birch' or 'hail' — and those names are the root of the symbolism read today. Zodiac Fortune Club treats them as material for reflection, not as a source of predictions.

The Elder Futhark

The Elder Futhark is the oldest known runic alphabet: twenty-four characters divided into three groups of eight, traditionally called aettir. The name comes from the sound values of its first six runes — f, u, th, a, r, k. The list below follows that traditional order.

How to Use Runes for Reflection

One-Rune Reflection
  1. Write down one question you actually care about today — one sentence, no lists.
  2. Draw the Daily Rune, or open a published rune page and read its symbolism slowly.
  3. Pick the reflection question that makes you slightly uncomfortable, and answer it in writing.
  4. Close with one small, concrete thing you will do or stop doing this week.
